Despite her golden run in international athletics this season, teenaged sprint sensation Hima Das said she did not expect her name to be nominated for this year’s Arjuna award.
Ever since she was a kid, Hima Das woke up every morning before the crack of dawn and would go to the local grazing ground in a remote Assam village. With no proper gear or even a playground, she practiced running at this grazing ground, around 50 metres from her house, before the villagers let their cattle loose post sunrise.
Star sprinter Hima Das on Tuesday backtracked from her statements against two individuals from Assam whom she had accused of exerting “tremendous pressure” ahead of her flunked 200 metre semi-final at the 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia.
Indian athletes Dutee Chand and Hima Das qualified for the women’s 200 metres semi-finals at the 18th Asian Games here on Tuesday.
Indian sprinters Muhammed Anas, Hima Das and Dutee Chand claimed silver medals, while two rare silver medals in equestrian and two bronze medals in the bridge event soared India’s medal tally to 36 at the end of ninth day at the 18th Asian Games on Sunday.
