Hyderabad: It is another feather in the cap for Hyderabad Public School, Begumpet whose alumni YS Jaganmohan Reddy is the Chief Minister designate for Andhra Pradesh. With this, YS Jagan will the second CM to have studied in the premier school, the first one being the sixteenth AP CM N Kiran Kumar Reddy.
The former CM joined politics after the death of his father and was first elected to the assembly in 1989. He was elected to the assembly four times, losing once in 1994. The law graduate served as Speaker for nearly 17 months before being sworn in as the CM in November 2010, after incumbent K Rosaiah resigned. Rosaiah had been chosen to replace YS Rajasekhara Reddy, who died tragically in a helicopter crash in September 2009.
The 96-year-old institution holds a grand list of prominent corporate honchos which include Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, Mastercard CEO Ajay Banga, Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayan, Fairfax Holding chairman Prem Watsa, also known as the 'Canadian Warren Buffet'.
Among politicians, HPS also holds a legion of famous alumni including the Owaisi brothers -Asaduddin Owaisi and Akbaruddin Owaisi, former union minister P. Ashok Gajapathi Raju, the last CM of undivided Andhra Pradesh N Kiran Kumar Reddy and India’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Syed Akbaruddin.
Not just corporate honchos and politicians, the school churns out prominent film celebrities too. They are, Akkineni Nagarjuna, Daggubati Venkatesh, Daggubati Rana, Ram Charan Tej and Poonam Kaur who took to films, and Shilpa Reddy became a designer while Venkatapathy Raju played cricket for India.
HPS is a privately-funded public school (ICSE & ISC), with two branches in Hyderabad (Begumpet and Ramanthapur) and one each in Kadapa, Andhra Pradesh and Warangal, Telangana.
Founded as Jagirdar College by the VIIth Nizam of Hyderabad in 1923, the school was originally meant for boys from aristocratic families. It was renamed the Hyderabad Public School, and made co-educational, in 1951 after the Jamindari system was abolished. The sprawling 130-acre campus encompasses buildings with Asaf Jahi style architecture, trekking routes, rock-formations, two cricket fields, an athletic arena and hockey and football grounds. The library offers a treat to the eyes for all book lovers.
