New Delhi: Research scholar Rohit Vemula who committed suicide in University of Hyderabad (UoH) campus on January 17 was not a Dalit, Union Minister Sushma Swaraj said.

Addressing the media in Maharashtra on Saturday, she said that according to the information that she has the student was not a Dalit. “Vested interests are portraying him as a Dalit student. Such portrayal does not have any strong evidence to make those statements,” she said.
Several opposition parties have alleged that BJP and its student wing were the reason that Rohit committed suicide. Congress party general secretary Rahul Gandhi visited the UoH campus twice already and blamed the BJP for the state of affairs in the University.
