Trump Terminates US Relationship With WHO Over Coronavirus And China

 - Sakshi Post

WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump said Friday that the US would terminate its relationship with the embattled World Health Organisation and will start the process of withdrawing special trade benefits for Hong Kong.

Trump accused the WHO of protecting China over the coronavirus pandemic and was stressing over the failure of WHO to enact reforms in the face of concerns over its handling of the virus. Trump said that the world is now suffering as a result of the misfeasance of the Chinese government. Donald Trump also said the country would be suspending the entry of certain Chinese citizens.

Trump has already announced that the country is going to stop funding to the WHO. The US is the largest financial support for the WHO to the tune of nearly $450 million a year.

Donald Trump said from the White House, "We have detailed the reforms that it must make and engaged with them directly, but they have refused to act. Because they have failed to make the requested and greatly needed reforms, we will be today terminating the relationship with the World Health Organisation.” He asserted that the funds would be redirected to other worldwide and deserving urgent global public health needs.

The American Medical Association said in a statement that the decision to end a relationship with the apex health body would serve no logical purpose and makes finding a way out of this public health crisis dramatically more challenging.

The President further added that "Chinese officials ignored their reporting obligations to the World Health Organization and pressured the World Health Organization to mislead the world when the virus was first discovered by Chinese authorities. Countless lives have been taken and profound economic hardship has been inflicted across the globe."
