Hyderabad: In the backdrop of cow vigilantes and Bakrid around the corner Muslim organizations on Tuesday signed a joint petition urging the state government to sell the animals through animal husbandry department counters for sacrifice in order to avoid harassment from various animal protection groups.

The petition has been signed by Soofi Academy, Sunni Ulema Board, All India Muslim League, Awami Majilis Amal, Telangana Minority State Forum and Sunni Ulema Council.

“The way milk is sold though Vijaya Dairy on Id-ul-Fitr, similarly we request the government to make necessary arraignments for sale of cattle through animal husbandry department counters across the state,” they said in representation.

Following the illegal transportation of cows into the city for slaughter, city police commissionerates have put check-posts in places such as Chandrayangutta, Santoshnagar, Kanchanbagh, Bahadurpura, Malakpet, LB Nagar, Shamshabad and Narsingi.

Soofi Academy general secretary Moulana Syed Taraq Quadri said that they are sensitizing their own community members not to sacrifice cow and other animals which are prohibited from slaughtering. Sheep, buffalo and oxen are the legally permitted animals for sacrifice.

Meanwhile, police are conducting awareness programme in Old city about animals that could be sacrificed on Bakrid.

South Zone DCP V Satyanarayana said, “A veterinary doctor has been attached to each assistant commissioner of police (ACP) in the South Zone. Cow and calf slaughtering is prohibited. Awareness camps are being held and strict action will be taken if someone transports or keeps cows for slaughtering during Bakrid.”

Incidentally, Chandrayagutta police on Monday night arrested two persons identified as Syed Basheeruddin and Mohammed Siraj for illegally transporting two calves.
