Leader of Opposition in Andhra Pradesh legislative assembly and YSR Congress party president YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has always endeared himself to the BC groups in the state. Taking this forward, the YSRCP held a massive BC Garjana at Eluru on Sunday. The contrast between the TDP’s Jai Ho at Rajamahendravaram aimed at BCs and YSRCP’s BC Garjana was clearly evident to any discerning person.
At the TDP meeting, crowds started to leave even as Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu was speaking and a video to this effect went viral. At the BC Garjana in Eluru, a massive gathering people heard the YSR Congress party president with rapt attention till the very end.
An important feature of BC Garjana was the presence of prominent BC leader from Telangana, R. Krishnaiah, who praised the efforts of the Leader of Opposition in AP assembly for his unrelenting efforts to improve the condition of BC communities in the state. He also recalled the sterling contribution of YS Jagan’s father, former chief minister, late Dr YS Rajasekhara Reddy to the cause of amelioration of the downtrodden, particularly BC communities.
Krishnaiah also observed that the YSR family was always true to its words. In the past, Dr YS Rajasekhara Reddy had issued orders to fulfill all demands made by BC communities and that justice to the BCs was possible only if YS Jagan became the chief minister of Andhra Pradesh, he remarked. He pointed out that the YSRCP chief’s statement stating reservations would be extended to BCs in nominated posts also, was a major step in this direction.
Krishnaiah remarked importantly that Chandrababu Naidu has insulted the BCs and that the TDP chief should be taught a lesson by the people of the state. As for YS Jagan, he spoke at length on how the TDP supremo had betrayed BC groups in the state by making 119 promises to them at the time of 2014 elections and later going back on all of them. He also reminded the mammoth gathering of the BC Declaration of Chandrababu Naidu. Further, YS Jagan revealed how Chandrababu Naidu had promised to allocate Rs.10,000 crores per year to BC groups and gave Rs. 18,000 crores in five years instead of Rs.50,000 crores.
YS Jagan explained at length to the large audience how he proposes to take steps to improve the lot of BC groups in the state, especially ones which had not been recognized. He listed out the names of such groups. He also made a very important statement that the YSR Congress party would assign Rs.15,000 crores to BC communities per annum once it comes to power. Another significant statement he made was that 50% of the nominated posts would be reserved for BCs, SCs, STs and minority groups. YS Jagan added that an Act would be brought to this effect.
The YSRCP chief made another pathbreaking announcement in saying that 50% of nominated works would also be set aside for backward classes. This would help the BCs immensely and empower them economically in many ways. YS Jagan also recalled many of his experiences from his mass contact initiative, Praja Sankalpa Yatra. In nominating the well-known party leader Janga Krishnamurthy from BC community to the legislative Council, YS Jagan earned the appreciation of the massive gathering.
Several speakers at the meeting referred to the manner in which Chandrababu Naidu had humiliated members from BC communities. They cited the examples of how he blocked the elevation of BC lawyers to judges, how he threatened members of the Nayee Brahmin community, as also fishermen. The BC Garjana was a clear reflection of the seething anger across the State against Chandrababu Naidu. It must be said that one gets the impression that YSRCP's BC Garjana points to a clear win for the party in the upcoming elections in Andhra Pradesh. One also tends to feel that Chandrababu Naidu‘s attempts to spend taxpayers’ money to the extent of Rs.30,000 crores to buy votes will not yield any electoral dividends.
