COIMBATORE: In a tragic incident, four engineering students who were allegedly sitting on the tracks and consuming alcohol were run over by a train in Coimbatore on Wednesday late night.

The incident happened on the Rowthar Palam rail over-bridge near Sulur in Coimbatore when the Chennai–Alappuzha express was passing by.

Alcohol bottles and plastic cups were found near the track and the police suspect that students might have come here for having liquor,” the inquiry officer said. Bothanur Railway Police reached the spot and retrieved four bodies and one student who sustained injuries,said railway police.

The deceased were identified as D Siddique Raja , Rajasekar , M Gowtham, and Karuppasamy who were students of a private engineering college in Coimbatore. The bodies have been sent Coimbatore Government Medical College Hospital for post mortem and an FIR has been filed. M Vignesh, a final year engineering student who was rescued with grievous injuries, is undergoing treatment in a private hospital here. His condition is said to be critical.
