Lakhimpur: A six-year-old girl was gang-raped and murdered by two minor brothers in Lakhimpur Kheri district of Uttar Pradesh, the police said on Thursday.

The girl studying in class 1 went missing on Tuesday afternoon. She was last seen playing near the house of the accused. When the girl did not return home, her family tried to find her and later informed the police, after which the police started a search operation.

Poonam, senior superintendent of police (SSP) of Kheri, said that the search operation went on overnight.

The body of the girl was found on Wednesday when the mother of the accused made a confession to the police that when she came to know that her sons had strangled the girl, she helped her sons to hide the body.

Station house officer (SHO) of Phoolbehad police station, Shyam Narayan Singh said, "The body of the girl was found about 200 meters away from the house of the accused. The accused told us that they had invited the girl to the house by luring her with a toffee."

Both the accused have quit their studies and are 15 and 12 years old. The accused had confessed to raping the girl.

The police have taken the two brothers and their mother into custody and have registered a case against the trio under murder and proof of concealment and poxo.
