DCW Demands PM To Implement AP’s Disha Bill In Entire Country

NEW DELHI : After Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly passed the Disha bill on Friday, Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) Chief Swati Maliwal on Saturday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding immediate implementation of the Act in the entire country. The Act which mandates disposal of cases of atrocities against women within 21 days and handing out the death penalty in cases of rape and murder.

According to the new law proposed by the AP state government the accused will get capital punishment if there is conclusive evidence to prove crime cases against women such as rape. As per the new act it endeavours to conduct enquiry in 7 days, investigation in 14 days and the judgement would be announced in 21 days, .

AP Government named the proposed law as 'Andhra Pradesh Disha Act Criminal Law (AP Amendment) Act, 2019 as a tribute to the veterinary doctor who was raped and murdered by four persons at Shamshabad recently in Telangana state.

The DCW chief also expressed sadness over the "indifferent attitude" of the central government till date over the issue of women's safety. Swati Maliwal, who has been on a hunger strike for over 10 days to demand capital punishment for rapists, said she will not end her fast till the Disha Bill is implemented in the entire country.
