Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy hit the ground running, as the saying goes, in putting in place a fast track model of welfare governance. As soon as he assumed office, YS Jagan focused on the implementation of Navaratnalu. This was a promise he made on multiple occasions during the course of his fourteen month-long Padayatra through Andhra Pradesh. By delivering on his promises to farmers, women’s groups and students, YS Jagan set the wheels of development in AP in motion straight away.

Addressing district collectors on Monday, YS Jagan ordered the demolition of an illegally constructed conference hall, Praja Vedika, right next to a similar construction which housed the TDP supremo. In doing so, he sent a clear and emphatic message to all parties, as also the general public—Illegal structures will be pulled down across the state of Andhra Pradesh. His decision marks a first in the history of the state.

YS Jagan ordered the formation of a cabinet sub-committee to probe corrupt deals of the TDP government across the board. In announcing reverse tendering policy and revisiting costs of irrigation projects, which were hiked arbitrarily by the TDP government, YS Jagan displayed his resolve to set a benchmark for transparency and honesty.

The chief minister also constituted a high-powered committee to overhaul education demonstrating his eagerness to lend a professional edge to the much-neglected field. YS Jagan emphasised on the need to adhere to the highest standards of merit in the selection of academicians, including vice-chancellors.

The chief minister also stressed upon the need to provide comprehensive and effective healthcare to all citizens, especially the poor.  He told officials that the days of children being bitten by rats in government hospitals and doctors performing surgeries using torch lights are over sending a firm message.

In extending the Amma Vodi scheme to students of intermediate, the Andhra Pradesh chief minister took a revolutionary step in enhancing enrolment and arresting dropout rate of students. Posterity will remember YS Jagan for his statesman-like vision in introducing this and other pioneering welfare schemes.
