Amaravati: The Election Commission of India has still not issued any communication about the request made by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu to hold a Cabinet meeting tomorrow, May 14. Despite the officials suggesting to him to wait until further orders are received, reports are emerging that Chandrababu is mulling the option of going ahead with his plan on Tuesday. Suspense prevails as to whether he will or not?

The Chief Minister called on chief secretary LV Subramanyam here on Monday to enquire about any updates received from the Election Commission of India. The latter is believed to have said he had not received any such orders and suggested to the former to wait until Monday evening, expecting further orders.

Chandrababu recently announced that he would hold the cabinet meeting on May 14 and directed the chief secretary LV Subramanyam to make arrangements for the meeting in the Secretariat. However, with the Model Code of Conduct in force the CS suggested that the government first write to the Election Commission of India to seek its permission.

Reportedly miffed by the answer, the Chief Minister had sent the request and is awaiting the EC's nod. The screening committee headed by the chief secretary submitted a written communication seeking permission from the State Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Gopal Krishna Dwivedi along with the agenda to conduct the cabinet meeting. The CEO sent the report on May 10 to the EC.

The EC will go through the agenda of the meeting and take a decision whether to give its nod for all issues or some or to deny permission for the meeting. Once the EC gives its nod, the officials concerned can attend the meeting. It is said that the Cabinet meeting can be conducted tomorrow only if the permission is sent by Monday evening.
