Is the TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu keeping a close eye on his candidates? The buzz in TDP circles is that their party supremo is tapping their phones and eavesdropping on their conversations. May 23 will decide the fate of the TDP and its candidates. Why is Chandrababu Naidu so impatient as to try to find out what his party candidates are up to? The TDP chief as also his candidates are uncertain about their voters’ preferences this time around despite the odd show of bravado.
From the evening of April 11, the polling day, Chandrababu Naidu started complaining about defective EVMs and started criticising the Election Commission on several matters. This itself, as YSRCP leaders pointed out, appeared to be a sign of defeatism and nervousness on the part of the TDP chief.
Chandrababu also seems to be afraid of the possibility of his MLAs crossing over to the YSR Congress party once results are announced. This has made even candidates who were confident of victory, feel uncertain about their prospects. Many of them are resentful of the fact that their own party chief seems to have no confidence in them.
What does this indicate? If Chandrababu Naidu has reached a point that he has to keep surveillance on his own candidates, it is a sign of his state of confidence, political analysts point out.
