TDP MLA from Tirupati Sugunamma is facing fierce opposition from the ruling party ranks. It is learnt that many local leaders are reluctant to take up campaigning for her if she were to be given the ticket again.

The growing resentment against sitting TDP legislators is brewing intensely, sources say. TUDA Chairman Narasimha Yadav is learnt to be on the job of trying to defuse the situation, but his trouble-shooting efforts have yielded little result so far.

Tirupati TDP leaders are said to have opposed the candidature of Sugunamma strongly and are likely to escalate the issue right up to the level of AP chief minister, Chandrababu Naidu. The party should back those who have been working for its success for a long time, they reportedly felt and have resolved to put this viewpoint across to the party leadership.

Local TDP leaders point out that Sugunamma and her husband, Venkataramana joined the TDP just before the 2014 elections. The Tirupati by-election was necessitated by the death of the current TDP MLA's husband.
