It was on this day that the late Dr YS Rajasekhara Reddy assumed office fourteen years ago. On May 14, 2004, the late Dr YSR was sworn in as the 14th Chief Minister of undivided Andhra Pradesh state.
The asumption of office marked the culmination of his resounding success at the hustings steering the Congress party to victory. This was preceded by his historic walkathon Praja Prasthanam from Rangareddy district to Srikakulam. The very first order that Dr YSR signed as chief minister related to the supply of free power to farmers which was one of the key election promises.
It would be pertinent to recall that one of Dr Rajasekhara Reddy's first announcement was that his government would accord priority to the farming sector. in fact Dr YSR stated emphatically that no farmer should be allowed to commit suicide because of debts. He wondered why rural indebtedness was not accorded the importance it deserved.
In contrast to Chandrababu Naidu's style of functioning, Dr YS Rajasekhara Reddy had a large hearted view of things and said on the very first day itself that he did not believe in politics of vendetta.
Dr YSR came up with a slew of people-friendly schemes including his flagship healthcare programme Arogyasri, fee reimbursement scheme and his celebrated irrigation projects. Jalayagnam brought water to large tracts of parched areas across the state. It must be remembered on this occasion it was the late Dr YS Rajasekhara Reddy who came up with the idea of 108 and 104 emergency services.
