Chennai: A techie died and her mother and sister sustained critical burn injuries after a jilted lover doused them with petrol and set them on fire, in Adambakkam AGS Colony of Saraswathi Nagar.

The accused, Ashok, was stalking the techie Induja since a couple of years. They both studied at the same engineering college. Later, Induja found employment with an IT firm. However, Ashok continued to stalk her and was said to have proposed to her which she refused.

On Monday evening, he came to her house again but Induja's mother Renuka refused to open the door. He insisted that he only wanted to talk to her for a few minutes. As soon as Induja's mother opened the door, he poured petrol on her and set her on fire. The techie's mother who tried to twart his attempt was also doused with petrol. In the resulting melee, Induja's sister Nivedha who rushed to her aid also sustained burn injuries. Neighbours rushed to their aid and shifted all three of them to Kilpauk Medical College (KMC) hospital.

On Tuesday morning, Induja succumbed to her injuries. Renuka sustained 49 percent burn injuries while Nivedha is recuperating with 23 percent burns. The accused, Ashok, is on the run.
